John and Christine Gachot, founders and principals of GACHOT, bring decades of experience shaping high-end residential, retail, hospitality, and commercial spaces. Melding timeless craft with modern technology, GACHOT creates work with a refined aesthetic and radical sense of place. As returning members of our Design + Art Advisory Council for the 14th edition of Salon Art + Design, John and Christine joined us for a round of rapid-fire questions on pieces in their collection that spark conversation, where people can see their work next, and more.

Art + Design Favorites

What’s a piece in your collection that always sparks conversation?

Hush by Marilyn Mintner hangs in our entry hall and always gets the conversation going. Immediately after walking in, our guests see it and ask, “what’s that?”

Advice

What’s the best question to ask a dealer or gallerist when considering a piece?

Work with someone reputable—there are lots of illegitimate copies out there. You want to collaborate with an art dealer who’s known and trusted in the industry.

What’s one myth about art or design collecting you’d like to debunk?

Buy what you love, instead of what’s trending. Art is subjective—invest in pieces that you’re actually drawn to, and they’ll truly be invaluable.

Plugs

What’s a project from the past year that pushed you creatively?

John’s painting shed in Shelter Island was creatively fulfilling due to the incredibly personal nature of the project. It was the first time his father’s art collection was moved, and layering our own pieces into this bod y of work required extreme thoughtfulness. The space came together beautifully, and it was a full circle family affair when the story was written about by our niece, Ella, for CULTURED Magazine.

Which upcoming exhibition is on your must-see list?

Flora Yukhnovich's Four Seasons at The Frick, where John just enjoyed a private tour. Frick Yeah!

Where can people see your work next?

Right here at home, in NYC’s West Village. Coming soon...it’s a special one.
