A Conversation with Julie Hillman

Julie Hillman's dynamic approach to interiors has earned her a yearly spot on the AD100 list for over half a decade. This year, she graces our Design & Art Advisory Council, and we asked her some rapid-fire questions about her dream home, go-to spots in New York City for creative inspiration, and much more.

Julie Hillman

What’s your favorite piece of art/design in your own home or collection?

Misha Kahn's "Miss Fishy" chair.

Who is your favorite artist to collect?

Mario Schifano.

What's your go-to NYC spot for creative inspiration?

What is your most recent acquisition?

A chair from Max Lamb's "BOX" Collection. It's made of repurposed cardboard from his studio, and from the back it looks like a Soulages painting.

What was your introduction to design?

My mother was my introduction to design. She took risks in decorating my childhood home. We had the most elegant library with leopard print flocked wallpaper, a huge red sofa the length of the whole room, and a gorgeous all-white Moroccan rug before they were in fashion.

If you were designing your dream home, which pieces would you choose?

David Gill candelabras, Galerie Marcilhac table lamp, Galerie Mathivet's Lalanne table, Galerie Chastel-Marechal's Royere table, Galerie Gabriel’s Royere chairs, The Shining Shiitake by Zein Daouk, Ephyra Light by Ethan Herrington, a Domitilla Harding vase from Nilufar, a piece by Tanaka Terukazu from Onishi Gallery, a chandelier from MaisonJaune Studio, from Yakusha Studio: a lamp by Andrii Mykhailiak, a set of Tiara vases, a piece by Serhiy and Anna Baiersdorf.

What upcoming project(s) are you most excited about?

This fall, Ginori 1735 is showcasing a new edition of their Reborn project during Design Miami/Paris at their flagship store. Frederick Chambre of Piasa invited me to participate and I'm so honored to be a part of it. For the project, I designed two different table settings and some table lamps to be used on the dining table. I'm also working on an amazing private residence in Miami with Diller Scofidio + Renfo.
