A Conversation with Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore is known for her breadth of work, with many memorable performances from the big to the small screen. This year, she graces our Honorary Committee, and we asked her some rapid-fire questions about exhibitors she's looking forward to seeing at Salon, her favorite art/design pieces from her collection, recent acquisitions, and much more.

Julianne Moore

What’s your favorite piece of art/design in your own home or collection?

The first major piece of design I acquired was a Nakashima slab coffee table. It was a big purchase for me at the time and I have never regretted it. It gives me such pleasure to live with it, and to think about how and why it was made. When I visited George Nakashima Woodworkers in New Hope, I came away even more of an acolyte - he lived and worked in a beautiful and inspiring way.

What exhibitors are you excited to see at the fair?

I have been friends with Evan Lobel since the year 2000 - I always went to his gallery on the way home from my son’s karate class - I became a client and then a close friend. I am obsessed with this pair of La Verne lamps. Evan has the most exquisite taste. I also love these

chairs, this Chinese lacquered tea caddy, this gorgeous turquoise ceramic, the Belperron ear clips, and please someone give me this Schlumberger fish lighter, I have a thing about fish lately.

What’s your favorite NYC museum?

MoMA - I love the Architecture and Design exhibit that Paola Antonelli has curated - her breadth of knowledge is so impressive, I learn so much every time I visit. And the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City - his work is elevated and accessible in the most brilliant way.

What is your most recent acquisition?

My most recent acquisitions are a Raoul Guy metal and green lacquered table that I bought for my kitchen (I have 4 wicker Guy chairs that I bought years ago at Les Puces in Paris) and a Pierre Chapo eye table. I bought them both at Magen Gallery (@magenhgallery).

What was your introduction to design?

My mother had a very strong sense of aesthetics. She was always showing me where to look, and what was beautiful.

What are the first three songs on your “get work done” playlist?

My son Cal’s new EP: Doing Better @calebmoore_music

Best design book / podcast / meme / blog / article you’ve consumed recently?

It’s not a design book per se but I get so much inspiration from Jane by Theo Wenner (@theo123456). It’s a photographic portrait of his mother Jane Wenner.

What’s your advice to an entry level design collector?

Look everywhere - books, museums, Instagram. Go to galleries and ask questions. I learned so much from gallery owners, they have been so generous with their knowledge and really educated me.

What’s the best design advice you’ve ever received?

You don’t have to like everything. Develop your own taste.

What upcoming project(s) are you most excited about?

My movie THE ROOM NEXT DOOR is opening this fall. Directed by Pedro Almodovar, with Tilda Swinton @theroomnextdoormovie.
